OSHA Recertifies East Penn’s Metals Division with Star Status

East Penn’s Metals Division was recertified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). On April 7th to April 11th, 2003 the Metals Division, for the second time, achieved the elite STAR status.

East Penn is the first battery manufacturer nationwide to have any part of its operation granted STAR recognition in the OSHA VPP receiving the first certification in October 1999. This program recognizes companies with outstanding commitments to maintaining safe work environments. STAR status is the highest possible achievement in this program. Only 900 other work sites in the country have received this honor.

The OSHA VPP audit team toured the Smelter and Oxide plants, conducted interviews with the employees and management, and reviewed East Penn’s safety and health program documentation. The audit team based their evaluation on several factors including 19 key program elements, policies and special program reviews, and work site evaluations.

East Penn’s Metals Division excelled in their established safety and health programs. The division was also commended for their management leadership and employee involvement, worksite safety, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training.

This outstanding achievement is directly attributed to the dedication of East Penn’s Metals Division employees and their continuing effort towards further safety improvements.
