THE BACKGROUND & SITUATION
The material handling industry can be demanding and tough on expensive equipment. There is no time for downtime, and batteries struggling to perform can result in unreliable equipment, ultimately impacting operational efficiency. That was the case when it came to batteries for a major industrial parts provider’s warehouse in the New York City metro area, that utilizes order pickers, reach, and turret forklifts to conduct their day-to-day operations. Even though the warehouse performance was best in class with Deka batteries, their management team decided to bring in another power source to test against the Deka product, thinking there was a better solution.
THE EVALUATION
To get the comparison started, a power study was performed by Electric Battery, a member of the Deka Motive Power Sales & Service Network, the largest independently owned and exclusive network in North America. Through this study, the facility’s battery power demand for its operations was estimated to be 114,000Ah per year. Based on the estimate, Electric Battery along with East Penn Product Support and Electric Battery installed two new Deka D-Series batteries equipped with WBID’s (Wireless Battery Information Devices) to conduct quarterly downloads and reports to monitor performance. The WBIDs were also added to the competitive batteries to compare results head-to-head.
THE RESULTS
Over the course of five years, both sets of batteries, the Deka D-Series and the competitor brand, were put to the test within the warehouse’s busy operations. Quarterly reports were made regularly to keep track of how each battery was performing. Following multiple site visits by East Penn Product Support and Electric Battery, a cumulative report was generated showing the results from the five-year test. The evaluation showed that the Deka D-Series batteries outperformed the competitive product by 18%, meaning more lifts per shift and longer overall life.
THE CONCLUSION
Following the power study comparison, the results and data were provided to corporate leadership to illustrate the performance and value of Deka batteries for all future fleet purchases. Based on these results the customer stayed exclusively with Deka batteries. Following transition to Deka product, data was collected to reveal the daily average Equivalent Battery Units (EBU) needed was 0.4, which proved this application is best suited for conventional Deka D-Series lead batteries. The tireless effort and support by East Penn Product Support and Electric Battery combined with the consistent quality and performance of Deka’s motive power batteries provided the ultimate Deka difference to this customer. East Penn is committed to find the perfect fit for your application and our team will provide the service and support needed for your success.
