At East Penn, we’ve always been committed to sustainability and are proud to manufacture a product with a 99 percent recycling rate. We want to do more than just spout statistics, however. We want to make a difference on a global level.
That’s why we’re proud participants in Lead Battery 360º (LB360).
What is LB360?
LB360 is a global program designed to improve environmental, health, and safety standards throughout the lead battery value chain. Created in 2019 by four entities, including Battery Council International, LB360 addresses critical gaps in how lead batteries are collected, recycled, and manufactured, particularly in lower-income countries where regulatory standards and recycling practices can be dangerously inadequate.
Being a LB360 participant means several things:
- Committed to responsible practices
- Meeting performance expectations defined by the program
- Required to publicly report on key performance indicators
- Adherence to the program’s Seven Guiding Principles, which set a global benchmark for lead battery stewardship and responsible supply chain management, via an independent audit
LB360 Certification
To further show our commitment to transparency, traceability, and ethical sourcing, we are currently on a quest to become one of the first certified LB360 participants. This will verify that our processes, from sourcing to recycling, adhere to rigorous standards designed to protect people and the environment. This is not just important for our company, but also the entire industry and the communities impacted by lead sourcing and recycling.
“As a battery manufacturer and recycler, we see there’s a great opportunity for the industry to drive more environmentally responsible recycling,” said Norbert Maleschitz, East Penn’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “As a company, we hold ourselves to a high standard and proactively self-govern environmental responsibilities.”
At East Penn, we’re uniquely positioned to excel in this mission. Our on-site recycling facility is less than a football field away from many of our manufacturing facilities. This tight, closed-loop system ensures used batteries are safely processed and transformed into new ones without unnecessary transport or risk of irresponsible recycling.
